Get Rid of Canadian Geese

How To Get Rid of Canadian Geese

Geese have started to nest and breed right in city parks. They bring up their young goslings there, and of course, there is goose mess everywhere.

Canada geese have habitats all over the United States, and North America. Many people think the geese are cute, but you have to consider that their feces in great amounts can be a breeding ground for disease.

So how do you get rid of geese once they become a nuisance? Well first of all, stop feeding the geese! If people feed them, they will definitely stay around the park, and nothing will be able to remove the geese from the park.

Goose Fencing

You can put fences up between the pond and the water. Geese like to be able to get ashore after swimming in the pond, so if there is a fence in the way, they will not like it. You might get the geese to leave the park due to this hurdle that you have put in their way.

If you think that goose fencing looks too ugly, you could instead build a barrier of shrubs, or surround the fence with plantings so it is disguised and looks more natural.

Don't Mow The Grass

Geese love to feast on the mowed grass that is common in so many parks and lawns. It is easy for the baby goslings to eat too.

So if you don't mow the lawns so often, the geese will have less to eat, and the site will not seem so desirable. Besides, it is hard for the baby geese to walk around in the tall grass.

So doing things like this will definitely help to get rid of the goose problem in your park or even private yards.

Plantings to Discourage Geese

There are certain types of plants that geese don't like: for example, periwinkle, Japanese pachysandra, and English ivy. So plant some of these around.

Or, just plant lots of shrubs and other hiding places for the goose's predators. The geese won't feel secure if they feel that they can easily be pounced upon from behind a bush.

Plant trees too. Geese don't like trees around because they have no room to fly.

Scaring Geese Away

A lot of methods have been tried to scare the geese and hopefully keep them away. For example, bringing dogs around to bark at them, or putting noisemakers around to frighten them.

These methods have had limited success, as the geese soon get used to them.

Geese Repellents

There are some products on the market that are made to repel geese. The one recommended by the EPA is ReJeX-iT. It can be expensive, though, but at least it should keep the geese away.

No matter what you do to get rid of your Canadian geese, you will have to be persistent and try different methods until you find the ones that work the best.
